How to get there: Go south from Red lodge going towards Cooke
city on Hwy 212. Take the lake fork trail head exit off of the
main hwy. The road will go up for about a mile or two before
hitting the lake fork trail head.
The Trail: Trail #1 is pretty flat all the way up to almost
Keyser Brown lake. The trail also runs along the creek all the
way up so stopping for breaks and getting fresh water is always
easy. Take the trail for 5 miles. Along the way you will pass
Broadwater lake. At 5 miles you will reach a trail head marker.
Turn south here and go up for about .5 miles until you reach
Lost Lake. From lost lake take the trail around the lake and up
to Black Canyon lake. It is only 1.5 miles from lost lake. The
trail gets harder and can get rocky if you take the wrong path.
The Lake: The lake itself is of average size. There is not
much for camping spots but Lost lake is not far away and is
better suited for camping. More and more people are going up to
this lake because of good fishing so do not expect to be alone.
The Fishing: This lake has some big cutthroats in it. Because
this lake is not really hard to get to, there are more and more
people going to this lake. Last time I was coming down from here
I ran into about 12 other people heading up the main trail. I
stopped and said hello to each of them and 11 out of the 12 said
they were headed up to Black Canyon Lake. Regardless of how many
people go to this lake it is a big lake and has room for
everyone. Its worth the trip if your looking for some good
fishing.
