Echo Lake:
I have heard that there are some nice fish at Echo lake but have yet to see even a fish rise let alone catch one. Echo is a short hike from Lake at Falls or Big Park Lake and the lake itself is pretty. It would be a long hike if trying to make it there from either the start of the trail head from East Rosebud or from the Cooke City side. There are several nice camping spots in the area of the lake.

7-Day Weather Forcast:

Coordinates: 45° 7'48.49"N 109°44'49.49"W
Hiking Distance: 9 miles
Difficulty:Fairly flat. Some switchbacks.
Camping: A very nice spot.
Fishing: Rumored to have some nice ones but have yet seen any.

Caution: Hiking/Camping in the mountains can be dangerous. Please read our caution page.

How to get there: From Roscoe go to East Rosebud. East Rosebud lake is surrounded by private land with log cabins on them. Access to East Rosebud lake itself is somewhat limited. The main road to East Rosebud will end at trail# 15.

The Trail: The trail is a well traveled trail and has lots of scenery on the way. The trail is a gradual climb but is not bad at all. At 3 miles into the hike you will arrive at elk lake a nice spot for a short break. Rimrock lake is about 3 more mile up the trail. When you about 3/4 of a mile from rimrock lake the trail gets a little steep and has some sharp switch-backs. One on top of the switch back you will find Rimrock lake. Go Around Rimrock lake and up the trail 1 more mile to Rainbow lake. From rainbow lake take the trail south following the creek. Lake at Falls is a 2 mile hike from Rainbow. Once at Lake at Falls keep going for another 2 miles to Echo. Between Lake at Falls and Echo is Big Park Lake. Shortly after big park lake you will run into a foot bridge that covers the creek. About a 100 to 200 feet before this bridge you will want to cut up to your right, opposite side of the creek, and try to find the trail that goes to echo. At times the path to Echo fades but if you continue and keep the sound of the creek within hearing distance, you'll come out at the lake.

The Lake: This is a very nice lake that many people do not go to. Most people traveling the beaten path bypass this lake for other areas. The lake is scenic and there are some nice camping spots in the area. Not only that but chances are that you will have the lake to yourself.

The Fishing: I have heard that there are some nice fish to be caught at this lake. I personally have not even seen a fish rise let a lone catch one. That's one thing about mountain lakes, one trip could be really good and the next time you get skunked. Because this lake is tucked away and it does not get a lot of pressure, I will keep trying when in the area.
