How to get there: From Nye MT head towards woodbine
campgrounds. Right past the still water mine take a right. The road
will switch back around the mine and end up at the parking area to
the trail head.
The Trail: Start on trail #90 and hike 6.5 miles along the
west fork of the still water. These first 6.5 mile are fairly flat
and easy. It is also very scenic and there are plenty of spots to
stop and try some fishing. Around 6.5 miles up the trail will open
to a small clearing. Along the side of the trail there will be a
carin indicating a very faint fisherman trail. The fisherman trail
then goes south 2.5 miles up some very nasty terrain if you get to
far to the east or west. I really would not call it a trail at all
and the carins are very hard to find. Tumble creek goes all the way
up but that area has a lot of downed timber. I found the route best
staying to the east and try to stay somewhere between the timber and
the boulder fields. About a mile and a half there is a steep climb
up a rock slide but is only about 300 yards.
Once on top the rest of the way to Jasper lake is pretty easy.
The Lake: This is a very nice lake. Its a medium sized lake
but is very shallow at most spots.
The Fishing: It does take some work to get to this lake. I
will be the first to say that it is WELL worth it. There are a lot
of hungry cutthroat trout. The fish average 12-15 inches and weigh
between .5 - 2 pounds. The last time I went up there I met an older
couple coming down. They stopped to talk and showed us some of their
dandies that they caught. They informed me that it did not matter
what they used and that they actually tried to use every piece of
tackle that they had just to see if they could find something that
the fish would not bite on. When I got up to the lake I tried the
same thing and had the same result and could not find one piece of
tackle that the fish would not bite on. I was catching a nice
cutthroat almost every cast and it did not matter what I used.
