Keyser Brown Lake:
Keyser Brown lake is a little jaunt for youngsters but the trail is mostly flat and follows the river most of the way. There is a little bit of a climb right before the lake. We usually stop a couple miles before the lake and camp at Lost lake mainly for two reasons. First, the kids are usually ready to stop by then and second, there tends to be a couple of guides that camp out with a group of people at Keyser. If it was not for those reasons we would probably march on to Keyser to camp because the fishing is usually better for us at Keyser.

How to get there: Go south from Red lodge going towards Cooke city. Take the lake fork trail head exit off of the main hwy. The road will go up for about a mile or two before hitting the lake fork trail head.

The Trail: Trail #1 is pretty flat all the way up until right before Keyser Brown lake. The trail also runs along the creek all the way up so stopping for breaks and getting fresh water is always easy. Take the trail for 6.5 miles. Along the way you will pass Broadwater lake. At the turn off for lost lake keep going straight on the trail. Right after the turn off to Lost lake you will cross a bridge. The trail does get a little steeper here but not too bad. Go about 1.5 miles past the bridge and you will come to the Keyser Brown turn off which takes you down to the lake. If you keep going up on the trail you will end up at September morn lake.

The Lake: The lake is fairly big and has a lot of nice camping spots. There are usually camps from guides set up on the west side of the lake.

The Fishing: I have had a lot of luck fishing in the outlet of the lake. The trail dumps you right at the outlet so I always stop here to fish. The inlet of the lake is pretty nice as well but find that the guides like to water their horses here and usually have this area pretty muddy. The lake has loads of small brookies and some pretty nice cutthroats.
