How to get there: Once at East Rosebud lake take the
trailhead that is also known as the beaten path. The well known
trail is 26 miles long and goes from East Rosebud to Cooke city.
Rimrock lake is 7 miles up the trail from East Rosebud.
The Trail: The trail is a well traveled trail and has lots of
scenery on the way. The trail is a gradual climb but is not bad
at all. At 3.5 miles into the hike you will arrive at elk lake a
nice spot for a short break. Rimrock lake is about 2 more miles
up the trail. When you about 3/4 of a mile from rimrock lake the
trail gets a little steep and has some sharp switch-backs. One
on top of the switch back you will find Rimrock lake.
The Lake: Rimrock lake is tucked away between very high rock
cliffs. The majority of the lakes shore drops off into very deep
water. Camping is very limited here although it is possible if
you get one of the few spots before anyone else. I like camping
and fishing at this lakes because most other hikers and
fisherman keep going up the trail to other lakes with better
camping.
The Fishing: This lake has some very nice fishing. I have yet
to be stumped at this lake. I like to work the shore line slowly
around the lake until I find a spot where the fishing is better
then other areas. Once I find this sweet spot I have been able
to catch a fish on just about every cast. Another nice aspect of
fishing this lake is that the type of fish caught will vary on
each cast. I have caught rainbow's, rainbow/goldens. Size of the
fish also vary from small babies to 2-3 pounders.
