Triangle Lake:
Triangle lake is one of my favorites. This is the triangle lake which is just past Glacier lake on the Montana side. The trail up to Glacier is mostly switch backs but not too bad. The trail from Glacier to Triangle is faded in spots but if you find it, its pretty easy. The kids and I love to go fishing here because its a very small lake with plenty of fish to catch.

Caution: Hiking/Camping in the mountains can be dangerous. Please read our caution page.

How to get there: Go south from Red lodge going towards Cooke city. Right before the switch backs going over the Beartooth pass take a right. Greenough lake is right off the main road. Keep going past the camp grounds onto a dirt road. The dirt road will go past M-K camp ground and keep going for what seems forever. At the end of the dirt road you will hit the trail.

The Trail: Once you start on the trail you will find out fast that the trail is fairly steep. The trail is full of switch backs that go up and up and up. The good news is that the switch backs only go up for about 2 miles. With some work you'll be up on top in no time. Once on top you will arrive at Glacier lake. Glacier lake is huge. There is a small trail that goes around the north end of the lake for about 3/4 of a mile. The trail then fades into a hard to follow fisherman's trail. Try to stay up towards the top for the bottom near the lake is full of boulders and loose rocks. If you can stay on the faint fisherman's trail you will quickly get back to level ground and the inlet of Glacier lake. Go up a small hill at Glacier's inlet and you will find the small Triangle lake.

The Lake: This is a very pretty lake. I always like smaller lakes. Glacier is very big so Triangle looks even the more smaller when you get there. The lake is so small that you could fish around the entire lake with little effort.

The Fishing: I have had some very productive days of fishing at this lake. I have fished this lake when the weather has been miserable and have still caught quite a few fish. The fish that I caught averaged 1-2 pounds but they seemed to really fight!
